Governmental Practice

Harman Claytor is engaged by governmental entities to represent their interests, and the interests of their employees, in litigation relating to tort liability, constitutional violations, civil rights, employment disputes and other matters. We have also provided counsel when disputes have arisen regarding the coverage provided by insurance policies or agreements governing public insurance pools and where a public entity has been self-insured.

Our lawyers have substantive experience in handling litigation on behalf of governmental entities involving alleged violations of 42 U.S.C. § 1981, 42 U.S.C. § 1983, constitutional claims involving the First, Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment, claims of excessive force, assault and battery, malicious prosecution, due process violations and tort related liability.

The constitutional, statutory and common law immunities and administrative provisions that apply to governmental bodies make it essential that attorneys representing a state or local entity have the knowledge and experience to vigorously and effectively represent the client’s interests in this specialized area of the law. The attorneys in the Governmental Practice Section at Harman Claytor have that knowledge and experience.
